Chevening Scholarships
General information on Chevening Scholarships for Cuban professionals interested in taking postgraduate studies in the UK
The Chevening Scholarship Programme is a truly global programme and operates in over 150 countries. Its purpose is to offer postgraduate studies to future leaders all over the world and to enable them to become familiar with the UK as well as to gain skills which will benefit their countries. Every year around one hundred applications are received from Cuban professionals to study in the UK under this programme.
Chevening Scholarships offer the opportunity to take courses of up to one year in any field of knowledge in any British university.
Requirements for applicants
Potential candidates should:
- have graduated from university at least two years before applying for the scholarship;
- have high intellectual and professional expectations and the will to gain skills which will benefit Cuba upon return;
- communicate fluently in English, both orally and in writing; and
- be involved in any of the following areas: environment, economics, communications, law or international relations.
The above list is not exclusive, therefore high-profile candidates who are involved in other areas are also invited to submit an application.
Which costs are covered by the Chevening Scholarships?
The scholarship is completely free for candidates chosen. The Chevening Scholarship covers all costs, including air travel, accommodation, subsistence and course fees. The cost of the English international exam IELTS is also covered.
How to submit the application?
Candidates should fill in the CHEV1 form (see below), in English and then should attach the following documents:
- copies of certificates endorsing previous studies and qualifications received;
- Certification of marks, preferably with an English translation, but only if available at this point;
- correspondence related to previous contact with a British University, if applicable;
- two letters of reference from two persons with whom the candidate has had professional links, preferably with English translations; and
- letter from the candidate's employer endorsing the Chevening application.
The preferences of the students should be clearly expressed in the corresponding field in the application form, which is included below as an attachment to download.
When and how to apply for a Chevening Scholarship?
The next deadline for applications is Friday 25 September 2009. Applications should be delivered to the British Embassy in Havana, in an envelope labelled APPLICATION FOR CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIP that also includes the contact information of the applicant.
