The Royal Ballet in Cuba (10/07/2009)
The prestigious Royal Ballet of London will perform in Cuba next July 14-18 in honor to Cuba´s Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso and the Cuban Ballet School.
The event scheduled to take place at Havana´s Gran Teatro (July 14-16) and at the Karl Marx Theater (July 17-18) has raised great expectations among the Cuban public. For many, the Royal Ballet performance in Cuba is a dream come true.
The Royal Ballet of London, made up of 96 dancers of 19 nationalities, will stage a program that includes pas de deux performances from its international repertoire. One of the evening sessions will be dedicated to Cuba´s National Ballet.
Highlighted figures in the Royal Ballet of London include Spanish prima ballerina Tamara Rojo and principal dancer Carlos Acosta, of Cuba. The presentations at the Havana Gran Teatro will count on the participation of the orchestra of that emblematic institution under the conduction of maestro Giovanni Duarte, as well as the Symphonic Orchestra, conducted by British Daniel Capps.
Jenny White, Director of the British Council in Cuba believes that : "The Royal Ballet is bringing Cuba and the UK closer together through a shared love of dance, art and music. The ballet celebrates the best traditions and also embraces contemporary dance. It is a living demonstration of the strength of dance education, the value of diversity with dancers from many countries coming together, and the inspiration and belief that dreams can become a reality as we see with this visit of the Royal Ballet to Cuba."
